Continuing the theme of extreme sports, ESPN also broadcast the traditional 4 July Nathan's Hotdog Eating Contest. This year the big news was the possible absence of Japanese athlete Takeru Kobayashi. In 2001, he shocked the world of competitive eating by smashing the world record of 25 hot dogs in 12 minutes by consuming 50.5 meaty snacks, and he has consistently raised that record in taking the title for the following five years.
Kobayashi also holds the record for hamburgers (97 in 12 minutes) and cow's brains (17.7lbs in 20 minutes) but this year he was rumoured to be suffering from a training injury. Despite this, Kobayashi showed up in Coney Island where he set a new personal best of 63 hot dogs. But this wasn't enough as American Joey Chestnut ended Kobyashi's reign and brought the title back to the US with a stomach-churning 66 hot dogs. Chestnut has been promising this for a while now, he has also eaten 182 chicken wings in 30 minutes and has drunk a gallon of milk in a mere 41 seconds.
