Home is where the car is

Motorists are so comfortable in their vehicles that they now feel free, at the same time as driving, to indulge in activities that would bring a smile to Jeremy Beadle.

Here's some of the driving behaviour observed that would make even Mr Bean's driving habits seem dull.

THE MOBILE RESTAURANT: Everything spotted . . .from the consumption of a Chinese carry-out (with chopsticks) by a motorist on a motorway to the more mundane sandwiches, ice creams and sticky buns.

THE LIBRARY: Whether it's War and Peace, the Sunday Tribune, Barbara Cartlasnd or a girlie mag, they have all featured spread over the steering wheel while the driver navigates the route.

THE BATHROOM: Harassed businessmen are often to be seen shaving at the wheel and are as likely to be spotted applying after-shave or moisturiser as the apocryphal lady with the lipstick.

THE OFFICE: Telephone calls, faxes and even the writing of reports or messages are commonplace.

THE KARAOKE BOOTH AND DRUM KIT: One of the favourite activities for the driver seems to be singing at the top of his voice accompanied by the percussive beat of two fingers on the dashboard.

THE BEDROOM: Kissing, ear-nibbling and other amorous exploits between driver and passengers.

THE INNER SANCTUM: Such savoury habits as spot squeezing, ear and nose hair removal, nail biting and tash trimming are frequently conducted. Presumably the motorist thinks no-one can see.

THE PLAYROOM: Stressed mums and dads can often be seen conducting activities such as charades, mimes or various singalongs, involving actions which entail removing both hands from the steering wheel (at the same time).

THE DRESSING ROOM: The removal of outer clothes and the putting on of ties, jumpers and even, in one case, an evening dress, is accomplished by drivers steering simultaneously with knees, elbows and wrists.

UNBELIEVABLE?

Never done anything like it yourself? Neither have I.

And neither do I always tell the truth. How about you?

All these amazing activities were observed by RAC patrols.
