Q I am finding it difficult to begin a career in the Non-profit sector, despite my qualifications and short stints working at various NGOs in Europe. I have been rejected at interview due to lack of experience and I am wondering if I could put my energies to better use?
A Is there a chance that you genuinely do lack the experience required for the jobs you have interviewed for to date? Can you get the experience you need by doing voluntary work for an organisation? You may well get the experience you need in other sectors.
Have you been effectively demonstrating at interview the transferable skills you have developed in your current and previous positions?
You must make a clear link between your experience in the past and these jobs you are seeking now.
Think about your current role. Have you examined all possibilities within this organisation? Is your employer aware of your longer term goals? They may be more willing to accommodate them than you think.
Do you have contacts in the non-profit sector that you can call on? There may be opportunities for you that are not advertised on job sites or in the papers. Many jobs are filled through networking, so get started!
Selection methods such as numerical and verbal reasoning are increasingly being used as pre-interview selection tools. There are many books you can buy to practice these. Even doing Sudoku each day can help develop these skills. If you want to be considered for interview, you need to score highly enough in these tests, so do some practice.
Changing or starting a career takes time. Stick with it. You will get there.
