JOCKEY Davy Condon rode his first winner since returning from a three month absence with a broken back when partnering 14/1 shot Barregarrow to a one length victory in the Low Low Galway Blazers Handicap Chase at Galway yesterday.
Condon was only passed fit to resume riding last Monday and Barregarrow's Wexford-based trainer Seamus Neville said "I'm delighted for him and it's fantastic to see him back. He gave the horse a brilliant ride and did exactly what he was told."
Neville was registering his first Galway success as a trainer, but recalled "Paddy Mullins trained Brideswell Dew to win a race for me as an owner on Plate day in 1985.
We'll probably look at Tralee and Listowel for this horse now, although he's generally a good ground horse."
The Jim Bolger-trained Bunsen Burner, with Kevin Manning in the saddle, ran out the convincing two length winner of the E40,000 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Premier Nursery Handicap. Owned by Harry Dobson, the 9/2 chance was a maiden prior to this success but has been a model of consistency and deserved to land the prize for his absent trainer.
The Black Lion was sent off favourite for the Jockeys Association Maiden Hurdle but the hot pot proved to be a big disappointment when trailing in second last behind the 10/1 winner Well Oiled.
He was later found to have burst a blood vessel when examined by the Turf Club veterinary officer at the request of the Stewards. A second winner of the week for jockey Roger Loughran and trainer Dessie Hughes, Well Oiled was unsuited by the heavy ground on his last outing at Ballinrobe.
Nintytwo Team sprang a 14/1 surprise for the local Paul Gilligan stable when capturing the valuable Freshways Handicap Hurdle by threeparts of a length in the hands of Andrew Lynch.
