Green Mile can maintain progress
Claire Barry

THE curtain comes down on the Galway Festival this afternoon and Dermot Weld is expected to continue his winning ways with a double through Instant Sparkle in the fillies maiden and Noble Crusader in the bumper.

Noble Crusader made a winning debut at Cork last month and bids for a follow up under Robbie McNamara in the Montrose Hotel (Pro/Am) INH Flat Race. The four-yearold son of Giant's Causeway is expected to have too many gears for Life For Rent who finished second in a Tipperary bumper recently, but was awarded the race in the stewards' room.

The Tony Martin stable has been in equally fine form this week and Green Mile, with Ruby Walsh in the saddle, gets the vote to maintain his current rate of progression with success in the Cork International Airport Hotel Handicap Hurdle. The Paul Nolan-trained Zanderi, who was a useful performer on the flat for John Oxx, ranks as the danger.

Nastrelli will have plenty of supporters in the M McNamara & Co Builders Dublin and Galway Handicap, but it may pay to take a chance instead with An Tadh, the mount of rising star Paul Townsend.

Racing also takes place at Cork where Age Of Chivalry is fancied to shade it from Rock Moss in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden. The John Oxx-trained selection showed promise first time out when second to Dedo at Naas last month, while Rock Moss also shaped well at the first time of asking when filling the runner-up spot behind One Great Cat at Fairyhouse.

Galway Hurdle-winning jockey Davy Russell deserts Ballybrit in favour of Cork but should be rewarded with a winner through Hill Fairy in the Ballyclough Handicap Hurdle. Ideal Appeal, from the Michael Halford yard, may be the answer to the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap, while Cherry Picked appeals in the Navigation Road Nursery.
