We may drink them all year round these days but there is no doubt roses come into their own in the summer months. Served chilled there is nothing nicer on a warm sunny day, either to sip before the barbeque is ready, or with all kinds of salads and lunches. Don't forget the fizz either. A cool glass of bubbles is always welcome when the weather heats up. We look at 10 of the best roses and sparkling wines
SECANO PINOT ROSE, 2006, LEYDA, CHILE /10.99 Marks & Spencer The red version, mentioned last week is an old favourite. I hadn't tried the rose before, but it is amazingly good . . . wonderful sweet ripe raspberries with a creamy texture.
DOMAINE BEGUDE PINOT ROSE, 2006, VIN DE PAYS D'OC /9.99 Superquinn A grown-up's rose, with really refreshing crisp dry redcurrant and raspberry fruits. Great on its own, even better with seafood and fish.
GUERRIERI RIZZARDI ROSA ROSAE, 2006, ROATO VERONESE, ITALY, /12.49 O'Briens Wine Off-licences It featured earlier this year, but this is one of my finds of the summer; delicious ripe smooth cherry fruits with a touch of real class. Light and elegant, this will charm the most hardened rose-hater.
DOMAINE DE TERREBRUNE BANDOL ROSE, 2005, /29.99 Berry Bros & Rudd A more serious rose this (if that is not a contradiction in terms), with plenty of body and good clean minerals to underpin the warm Provencal fruits. A food rose, to be drunk with a salade nicoise or a grand aioli.
ROSE COLLECTION MAREUIL LES FIEFS VENDEENS, 2005, /10.95 Wicklow Wine Co Another rose with attitude; this has a wonderful rich textured palate of strawberries and redcurrant with a long dry finish. Perfect with charcuterie and cold meats.
RONDINELLA PINOT GRIGIO ROSE, ALTO MINECO, LA PRENDINA, 2006 /10.99 Marks & Spencer Rondinella is a red grape , more normally found in Valpolicella. But here it combines beautifully with Pinot Grigio in a light but vibrantly fruity wine. Perfect lunch-time wine with salads.
OLVENA MERLOT ROSADO SOMONTANO, SPAIN, 2006, /8.99 Next Door, Manorhamilton; The Ferndale Restaurant; The Dew Drop, Athboy; Gibney's Malahide; Uncorked Martha's Vineyard, Rathfarnham A new arrival to these shores, Olvenaar is a smart new bodega in Somontano. Rose is a speciality in this part of the world, as shown by this very stylish smooth wine with distinctive redcurrant fruits.
BISOL DESIDERIO JEIO BRUT, PROSECCO DI VALDOBBIADENE, ITALY, /17 Bin number 9: Patrick Stewart, Sligo; Red island Wines, Skerries; O'Donovans, Cork Not the cheapest Prosecco, but this is certainly one of the classiest, with its complex, refreshing lemon and pear fruits. Made for summer drinking.
GREENPOINT BRUT NV, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA /24.49 Selected Tesco; Molloy's; The Big Wine Warehouse; Sweeneys, Glasnevin; Supervalu, Clonakility; Kellys, Clontarf and The Vintry, Rathgar Expensive, but worth it, from Australia's best producer of fizz. This has wonderful ripe raspberries and apples balanced by some complex bready notes, and a very classy finish. Better than most Champagne at 30.
CORDONIU PINOT NOIR BRUT ROSE, CAVA, SPAIN /14.50* Widely available including 64 Wine Glasthule, Dunnes Stores, Next Door Clane; Next Door Ennistymon; Gibney's Malahide; Redmonds Ranelagh; Uncorked Martha's Vineyard, Rathfarnham I am not a great fan of Cava, but this fairly rich, raspberry-flavoured fizz, with its lovely clean fruits, is an exception. On its own, or maybe with a fruit salad.
