IF you go down to the woods next week you're sure of a big surprise. More specifically, we're talking about the woods at Woodbrook Estate, at the foot of the Blackstairs Mountains in Co Wexford. Taking place over three days, you'll find the first ever Irish Green Gathering, a non-profit festival which will be run entirely on renewable energy. Given that the handsome Georgian Woodbrook House went green in 2006 . . . its hot water is heated by solar panels, the boiler burns wood pellets and the family car runs on 100% biofuel . . . it's a suitable setting for such an eco-friendly endeavour.
Aiming to be low budget, family friendly and reasonably priced, the organisers (Giles and Alexandra FitzHerbert, who own and live at Woodbrook) have arrnged a line-up that balances music, film, fun and education.
The music line-up is an eclectic mix of trad, electronica, rock and indie acts. Workshops will cover everything from climate change to eco building, exhibitors will showcase the latest green technology and organisations like FEASTA, Cultivate and Seed Savers will be present too. The children's area has an excellent programme of activities while earthy folk might enjoy a massage or tarot reading in the healing tent. Expect movies and healthy food, including organic treats and roast hog. Something different for the weekendf It costs 50 for weekend camping and 20 for a day ticket, under 14s free if accompanied by adult.
Free parking. 17-19 August 2007. www. irishgreengathering. com.
