Pastures new for 'lifestyle farmers'
Roisin Carabine

FOR high-flying, cash-rich 'lifestyle farmers' who may not know much about agriculture but know they want a big place in the country for the weekend, Cragg House in Co Tipperary could be the ultimate retreat.

This pretty, two-storey early Victorian property boasts spacious accommodation, separate guest accommodation, acres of land and room for a pony or two.

Sensitively and meticulously renovated to perfect condition by its current owners, the property boasts many original period details including gothic style gables, high corniced ceilings, original wooden doors with panelled entrances, fireplaces , arched entrance porch and large bay windows.

Accommodation is through an inner hall with mosaic tiled floor underfoot and recessed sash window with stained glass pane. Off it is the main hall, tiled in mosaic also, which leads to three large reception rooms, study, guest WC and traditional country kitchen, floored in Chinese slate, with Aga set into a brick alcove and featuring hand-crafted units topped with marble worktops and double Belfast sink. Also on this level are a wine cellar, laundry room, store room, studio room and playroom.

Upstairs on the first floor return is the main bathroom with freestanding bath, separate WC and bedroom. On the first floor are four more bedrooms, two en-suite.

Outside, a walled courtyard houses the original old coach house which has been converted into guest accommodation, a studio and three more rooms which are currently used as a private entertainment area.

Well hidden in the back yard is a large barn which is used for storage but could be converted into workshops or an American barn.

There are three stables at the entrance to the front field, enclosed with a water trough.

Cragg house is surrounded by mature gardens with an enclosed terrace and patio to the side of the property flanked by shrubberies, flower beds and rockeries.
