GLENGARRIFF Castle in West Cork is for sale with a guide price of 20m. The 18thcentury castle is located on a partly wooded 45-acre estate and commands spectacular views of picturesque Bantry Bay. The castle operated as a resort until the late 1970s but has since fallen derelict. Cork County Council has granted planning permission for the restoration and extension of the property as the focal point of a major hotel complex.
The castle, a 15-minute drive from Bantry, will be extended and refurbished to four-star standard and will include 94 bedrooms, two restaurants, two bars, a conference centre and function room. Permission for a leisure centre to include a spa and a swimming pool has been approved. Planning permission has also been granted for the construction of 18 apartments adjacent to the hotel. The architects involved have prepared a scheme design for a further 32 holiday homes arranged in a courtyard setting on a nearby site.
Planning permission for this aspect of the development has not been sought.
"It's a development site, really, " says auctioneer, Helen Cassidy. "The new owner will undertake the restoration, renovation and extension in accordance with the planning permission granted."
Glengarriff Castle has been listed as a protected structure in Cork County Council's draft development plan. Because this is a conservation and restoration project, the developer may be able to avail of certain specific tax reliefs. For further information contact Helen Cassidy Auctioneer on 094-954 6868.
