Q Do you have any advice on filling out application forms effectively?
A The application form is part of the selection process and will determine whether you get called for an interview. It may form the basis of the interview. So completing it effectively is vital.
Do not leave it to the last minute. Give yourself several hours to complete it.
Make some duplicate copies and only fill in the original form when you have a duplicate copy you are happy with.
Pay particular attention to any instructions given at the top of the application form. If you are asked to complete it in block letters you will make a poor impression if you fail to do so. Type your form and use the same font size and type throughout.
Where you are asked to provide examples of behavioural competencies, write these out factually and clearly. Be sure to focus on the outcome you achieved and how you achieved this. Use examples that demonstrate your skills most effectively.
You may need to check whether using the same example for more than one competency is acceptable.
Use the 'Additional Information' section to include career highlights, career achievements or other relevant information.
When you have completed the first draft, leave it for a few hours and come back to it with 'fresh eyes'. Make any changes you feel are necessary.
Make sure you keep a copy of the form for yourself.
Familiarise yourself with all the details you have included . . . you will need to elaborate on any of these points in the interview.
