HAYLEY TURNER justified her late call-up for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup in some style by collecting her first ever winner at Ascot.
Once again the straight track proved hard to read, with Martin Dwyer taking the lead aboard Dalkey Girl down the stands rail in the Barclays Shergar Cup Juvenile while the rest of the pack travelled further towards the centre.
Gypsy Baby and Dream Eater emerged as serious challengers but Turner's 331 shot Relative Order finished smartly and although he drifted to his left, he won by threequarters of a length to also help trainer John Best break his duck at the Berkshire course.
"It's nice to strike that off the list, " said Turner, who was replacing the suspended Seb Sanders. "I rode in the Shergar Cup last year and it was nice to come back again. He hung a bit and he's still green, but really game."
The 7-4 favourite Coasting was a disappointing last while Turner's Great Britain team and the European side took 15 points apiece to sit together at the top of the table after race one. Turner nearly repeated the trick in the Titanic Quarter Shergar Cup Distaff aboard 9-2 jointfavourite Dark Missile but was caught close home by the fellow market leader Our Faye.
Wokingham Handicap winner Dark Missile was apparently cruising and surged into the lead with one of the six furlongs to run. However, noone rides Ascot better than Jimmy Fortune at the moment and he conjured a rare rattle out of Our Faye, who obliged by three-quarters of a length to take her record this season to four wins from as many runs.
Trainer Sylvester Kirk reported: "I almost ran her in the Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood last week and she has improved with every run all year. I will look for a black type race for her now."
Britain managed to retain a narrow lead over Fortune's Ireland team. However, an Irish one-two in the following Porthault Shergar Cup Sprint Handicap made the event almost certain to go to the Irish, and official bookmakers Ladbrokes suspended their betting. The victory went to Roger Charlton's well-backed 6-4 favourite Genki, who was brought through by a cool Kevin Manning to collar team-mate Declan McDonogh on the front-running Lipocco.
He quickened away to win by an easy two lengths while Siren's Gift, who had been expected to be a leading contender, refused to enter the stalls and unshipped Andreas Suborics. "That was fantastic, " said Manning. "He travelled so well through the race and he was always going to pick up." Charlton added: "I was going to run him at Newmarket next weekend as I didn't think he would get in here."
Meanwhile a day of racing meant Clive Brittain looks to have another smart filly on his hands after Albabilia claimed the skybet. com Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket. Brittain, who has handled the likes of Pebbles, Sayyedati and Crimpline during his distinguished career, is hoping to claim some more big prizes with the filly after her stylish success at odds of 7-2. Ridden confidently by Ryan Moore, the daughter of King's Best hit the front over a furlong out and held the challenge of Don't Forget Faith by half a length.
"I'm delighted with that. I knew she was progressing but I thought the ground might have been quicker than she wanted."
