Organic lifestyle in west Cork
June Edwards

HOME-HUNTERS looking for a lifestyle change rather than just a house will undoubtedly be interested in the sale of Otto's, a well-known organic food restaurant at Dunworley near Clonakilty in west Cork.

Set on a 4.5-acre site in one of the most beautiful coastal areas in the country, the property includes a large detached five-bed house surrounded by organic fruit and vegetable gardens, planted walkways and a chicken coop, while the beach is just a few minutes' stroll away.

The current owners, a couple originally from Holland and Germany, are retiring from business. They built the house and restaurant about 10 years ago, although they have lived in the area for much longer.

Well-designed for the future, the house has roof-mounted solar panels, top-quality insulation and an energy-efficient heating system. And quite rare in modern Irish homes, a basement has been built to provide lots of storage.

While the property is famous for its restaurant, it would also make a very comfortable family home, according to selling agent Peter Cave of Savills HOK.

"The house was designed in such a way that it can easily revert to a family home if future owners weren't interested in running the restaurant, " says Cave.

Accommodation comprises a large kitchen of 20ft by 13ft, a reception room, five bedrooms all with en-suite, a rear hall, cold room, store room, office, workshop, and conservatory-style restaurant area.

The kitchen is fitted out to commercial-grade standards and includes all stainless steel appliances and non-slip flooring, while the large reception room of 19ft by 18ft has an elm wood floor, an open fire and hand-carved beech banisters leading to the lower floor.

All five bedrooms are doubles and come with solid timber flooring and fully tiled en-suite bathrooms or shower-rooms.

To the rear of the property the large conservatory of over 38ft by 13ft, currently the dining area, is truly impressive.

And with an abundance of sweet black hamburg and muscadet vines running along the glazed ceiling, and large potted plants dotted about, you'd be forgiven for thinking you are sitting outdoors. Stone flooring, large pine windows and elm windowsills add to the look and feel of this room, while just off here are guest toilets.

The house also has a wine cellar and plenty of storage, while outside the gardens are lush and green and mainly laid in fruit and veg, with a tree-lined walkway down to the chicken coop. And with a 4.5-acre site, future owners have lots of scope for further developing the gardens.

Dunworley is 10 minutes' drive from Timoleague, while Cork is less than an hour away.
