Ex-prime minister Raymond Barre dies
FORMER French prime minister Raymond Barre has died, aged 83, at a Paris hospital. He was being treated for heart problems, his family said yesterday. He was prime minister of France from 1976 to 1981, during a 30year political career that also included posts as economics minister, vicepresident of the European Commission and mayor of Lyon.
Two Afghans killed by roadside bomb
A ROADSIDE bomb killed two Afghans guarding a convoy carrying supplies for NATO-led forces, while eight suspected insurgents and a police officer died in fighting elsewhere in the country, officials said yesterday. The attacks were the latest in a tide of violence in southern and eastern Afghanistan over the last 18 months that has exposed the weaknesses of the westernbacked government in the capital, Kabul.
37 killed in forest fires in Greece
THE death toll from forest fires that have raged across swathes of southern Greece rose to 37 people, the fire department said yesterday.
Among the dead were a mother and her four children who had been reported missing. Huge fires, fanned by strong winds, continued to burn out of control yesterday.
Anger over terrorist 'hero' remark
FRENCH actress Fanny Ardant has sparked outrage in Italy by calling the founder of the Red Brigades terror group a "hero", prompting officials to question her participation in the Venice Film Festival. In comments published by Amagazine, she said she admired Renato Curcio, founder of the extremeleft terrorist group that plagued Italy in the 1970s and '80s. "For me he is a hero, " Ardant was quoted as saying. Curcio was jailed for 24 years for killings and terrorist attacks dating back to the 1970s.
