Galway blast way past Cork
Coilin Duffy

Extra-time goals from Barry Hanley and Kerril Wade ensured Galway advanced to the All-Ireland Under 21 hurling final on September 9 th following a blistering semifinal against Cork yesterday in Semple Stadium. Galway made the perfect start and held a 0-3 to 0-0 lead within the opening five minutes.

Despite Cork giving Galway the better start, the Rebels responded strongly, with points from Patrick Cronin and an excellent score from Kevin Canty, to cut the deficit to a point after seven minutes. A Pat Horgan goal ensured Cork held a two points cushion after the corner forward rifled the ball to the back of the Galway net.

Galway retook the lead but Cork's forwards were hungry for goals and a clever pass to Colm O'Neill ensured O'Neill was well positioned to take Cork's second goal.

However, once again Galway took control with a clever first pass from Sean Glynn finding Finian Coone who blasted to the net.

Cork held a 2-8 to 1-9 interval lead but the introduction of Conor Kavanagh after halftime proved vital as a Canning point and a Kavanagh goal ensured Tribesmen held a two point lead inside two minutes. The teams were soon level for the fourth time in the contest thanks to the resourcefulness of Patrick Cronin and Cathal Naughton but Galway continued to remain strong and held a 2-13 to 2-11 lead in the final quarter.

Cork came bounding back into the game and points from Cathal Naughton and Patrick Cronin ensured the sides were level for the fifth time in the contest, with as many minutes remaining.

A third point from Cathal Naughton ensured Cork broke in front with two minutes remaining but Kerril Wade was to equalise with 30 seconds left on the clock.

Although Stephen White looked like he had scored the winner on the stroke of the 60th minute, a sixth point of the day from Wade forced extra-time. Galway were strongest in extra-time and first half goals from Barry Hanley and Wade set them on their way to an All-Ireland final spot.
