Tipp to repeat Munster final win
Ewan MacKenna

FORGET the Munster final for a minute. Tipperary may have won that day but with 12 minutes to go and the game simmering nicely, Cork's Eoin McCarthy knocked the pot clean off the stove. A second yellow saw him head for the line and over the final stretch Tipperary pulled clear.

Impossible to tell just how much of an affect that moment had on Tipp's provincial glory. But if you must bring history into this as an indicator, go back a year. Tipp the challengers toppled Joe Canning's bid for three minor titles. Today they can call on six survivors from that team that defeated Galway including full-back Padraig Maher, wing-back Noel McGrath, captain Brendan Maher and chief scorer Seamus Hennessy.

Hennessy has amassed 029 to this stage but there is plenty of support around him. The two corner-forwards, John O'Neill and Michael Heffernan have pitched in throughout the campaign and as the semifinal against Kilkenny threatened to get away from them, it was this screen of scoring talent that saw them surge past the Leinster side and into another All Ireland decider. As for Cork, they are far more reliant on Ryan Clifford up front. He hit the net in the semi-final win over Dublin, hit the net three times against Waterford earlier in the year and is a handful. But for him and the rest of the Cork side this is new ground covered. The county haven't won an All Ireland minor title since 2001 (a day when John Gardiner, Jerry O'Connor, both Kieran Murphys and Sean Og amongst others lined out).

Tipperary manager Declan Ryan has another incentive to inspire his players. He's being tipped by some to succeed Babs and as the county seniors look to rebuild with a young side, this minor All Ireland on would add greatly to his CV. That combined with quality should mean Cork have to wait even longer for that minor title.

Forget the Munster final but expect a similar outcome.
