Greens' Gogarty to put name up

DUBLIN Mid-West TD Paul Gogarty is to put his name forward to become the next chairperson of the Green Party.

Gogarty's announcement, likely this weekend, means there will be a contest for what is a highly influential position. Senator Dan Boyle has already announced he is seeking the role.

Young man drowns in Sligo

A MAN in his early 20s drowned in a tragic accident in Lough Gill, Co Sligo yesterday morning.

The Sligo man is understood to have been at a house party on Friday night before he went for a swim in the lake at about 10am yesterday. Attempts made by his friends to save him failed after he got into difficulties and his body was later recovered from the lake.

Gardai in Sligo have launched an investigation into the incident.

Cork shooting incident GARDAI are investigating a shooting incident at a halting site in the early hours of yesterday. The incident occurred at around 7am in Knocknaheeny. Seven shots were fired. Gardai say one of the shots narrowly missed a sleeping child. The incident is believed to be part of an ongoing feud between two families and gardai at Gurranabraher.

Teen appears in court over death

A SECOND teenager appeared in court in Belfast yesterday charged in connection with the killing of 65year-old greengrocer Harry Holland. The 17year-old was remanded in custody to appear next month. Holland was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver at Norfolk Drive, west Belfast on Tuesday night and died the following day. On Friday a 15-year-old girl was remanded in custody by Belfast Youth Court.

Another 17-year-old male remains in police custody.

Galway Council water meeting

AN EMERGENCY meeting of Galway City Council took place yesterday to discuss the latest contamination of drinking water in the city.

Householders in the suburb near Salthill have been subjected to boil water notices again.
