THIS afternoon's Bank Of Scotland (Ireland) National Stakes at the Curragh promises to be the juvenile race of the season. The Group 1 contest brings together two particularly talented twoyear-olds in New Approach and Myboycharlie, whose future at stud is already assured, and adding further spice to the mixture is the presence in the line-up of the Godolphin representative Rio De La Plata.
The Jim Bolger-trained New Approach has followed the route successfully taken by his former stable-companion Teofilo, while Myboycharlie, from the Tommy Stack stable, represents the powerful Coolmore alliance.
Both horses are unbeaten in their three runs to date.
Unfortunately neither have raced on ground as firm as this before but Stack's charge, having won on soft going in the past, is expected to handle it well.
The Frankie Dettori-ridden Rio De La Plata, meanwhile, has also impressed in his two most recent outings and is open to further improvement. Slight preference, however, is for Myboycharlie, who will be ridden by Kieren Fallon. He is rated seven pounds superior to New Approach, whose trainer was originally torn between Friday's Parknasilla Hotel Goffs Million and this seven furlong contest for the Galileo colt's next objective.
Great Barrier Reef may prove to be the best of Aidan O'Brien's four representatives. He was entered for several races on the card but is held in sufficiently high regard to take on the big guns in the National Stakes.
His place in the Bank Of Scotland (Ireland) EBF Maiden is taken by his unraced stable-mate William Hogarth and what is significant about this High Chaparral colt is the fact that he is already second favourite for next year's Derby.
Stable-mate South Dakota gets the vote over the Eddie Lynam-trained Deal Breaker, who did well to win last time, in the Rosaleen Kelly Blenheim Stakes. Decado may be good enough to defy top-weight in the Ladbrokes. com Solonaway Stakes, despite the fact that, like Jumbajukiba, he would prefer soft conditions underfoot.
