We say : From a Fianna Fail background, McDonald cut her teeth in party politics at UCD. She won a Wexford council seat in the 2004 local elections and had a credible Dail bid last May but failed to win a seat. A solicitor by profession, McDonald was nominated to the Seanad by the Taoiseach, and unusually she was the only Fianna Fail nominee who had not sought to contest the election to the Upper House. She wrote to Ahern expressing interest in a nomination, and was "surprised" at his positive response. Ahern was a guest at her wedding . . . and she has the ear of his key advisers. She will be vocal on legal affairs issues in the Oireachtas but is unlikely to cause any headaches for the Fianna Fail hierarchy. Her next five years will be all about winning a Dail seat, without which her political career will not prosper.
She says: "As a lawyer, I am interested in law reform. I am also keen to see what Brian Cowen means by his phrase 'purposeful prosperity' and am interested in health and education."
