Georgian charm where two rivers meet
Valerie Shanley

IN A setting where two rivers converge, water has played a role in the running of Annagh Lodge, a characterful Georgian house at the foot of the Arigna Hills. Built by a Scottish family, the Frasers, at the beginning of the 19th century, the house formed part of a wooded estate where the Feorish river meets the Camogue downstream from the seven-arched Foyoges Bridge. The bridge is close to the main entrance to the lodge and the river flows into the estate to where a millrace filters the water to an old mill wheel.

The approach to the property is along a wooded avenue which opens to lawns, shrubberies, an orchard and a leafy clad pergola, all of which provide a picturesque frame to the house. The gardens are viewed from many fine rooms in the house, particularly from the conservatory, while the entrance hall doubles as a sunroom flowing light to the inner stair hall.

A big, country kitchen complete with wooden presses, oil-fired range and spacious breakfast area provides an informal contrast to the three main reception rooms.

There are four bedrooms, the master being en-suite.

Three of the bedrooms are in the main house; the fourth is in the self-contained apartment, which also has its own kitchen and sitting room.

There is potential for the creation of additional accommodation in the series of outbuildings in the stone-built courtyard . . . these have full planning permission granted for conversion.

Nearby are the lakes of Lough Allen (on the Shannon), Lough Arrow and Lough Key, while the towns of Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon are within 20km. Sligo airport is around 30km away.
