Victorian villa restored with care
Caroline Allen

A DOUBLE-HEIGHT bay window adds to the striking presence of No 10 Ovoca Road, South Circular Road, Dublin 8, a Victorian twostorey on a residential thoroughfare of mainly single-storey villas. This extensively restored and refurbished elegant family home combines a wealth of period detail with contemporary styling.

Original features include fireplaces, ornate plasterwork, panelled doors and sash windows.

The drawing room incorporates a deep bay window, cast-iron open fireplace, cornice, centre rose, polished floors and recessed and wallmounted lighting.

Double doors open into the dining room which also has a cast-iron open fireplace. It includes built-in alcove bookcases, cornice, centre rose, polished floors and window shutters.

This opens to the striking kitchen with its built-in wall and floor units with stainless steel countertop. The centre island has a solid beech countertop. Integrated appliances include De Dietrich oven, gas hob, Smeg extractor and Bosch dishwasher. Doors lead to the rear garden and the open-plan family room is adjoined with its raised Faber gas fire and built-in sideboard. Junckers flooring and recessed spotlighting add to the ambience.

The bathroom on the firstfloor return has two windows, cast-iron claw-foot bath and sink with Philippe Starckdesigned chrome fittings in a custom-made solid beech vanity unit, step-in shower, and built-in storage. The double bedroom has an entrance lobby, pitched ceiling, built-in wardrobes, concealed storage and additional lighting through two Velux windows.

On the first floor, the master bedroom with centre rose, cornice and polished floors, overlooks the rear of the house. There is another double room with bay window that is not directly overlooked. It also has the original centre rose and cornice, as well as polished floors and built-in wardrobes. The remaining single bedroom is currently used as a dressing room with wall-to-wall builtin wardrobes.
