Take to the hills in Blackrock
Valerie Shanley

THIS sunny three-bed home in Blackrock is an example of how a more modern approach to house design emerged at the start of the 20th century.

The red brick and dashed exterior combines with warm terracotta tiles, multi-paned windows and lofty chimney to give unique character to the front. Inside, a complete refurbishment has enhanced the bright, airy feel complete with cottage-style doors and a charming kitchen opening to the lushly planted rear garden.

Entrance is to the side of the house. Leading from the hall is the light-filled living room with period fireplace and solid oak floor. Next is the equally bright dining room with dual-aspect windows and oak floor. The main bathroom leads off the hall also, and again this is a sunny room with additional light from the Velux window overhead.

There is a welcoming, country-style to the kitchen with its pale painted presses, brick chimney breast housing the range, mix of slate tiles and inlaid wood floor and partpanelled walls. An attractive aspect to the space is the informal breakfast area, with inviting sofa as well as dining table and chairs, and a pot belly stove keeping everything cosy.

The breakfast area opens, through double doors, to the rear garden which has two patios (one paved, the other decked) and is lushly planted with trees, shrubs and flowers.

A fully fitted utility completes the rooms at ground floor level.

Off the upstairs landing are the three bedrooms, all with original, stained floorboards, fireplaces and fitted shelving.

The detached garage, could, with planning permission, convert to additional accommodation.

A few minutes' walk away is Blackrock village, good transport facilities, and the sea front.
