Finalists for AIG All Ireland singles confirmed

THREE handicap Emma Oliver from the home club County Armagh holed a nasty 6-foot putt on the 18th green to win the Ulster Final (ladies section) of the Sunday Tribune/AIG All Ireland Singles Competition. On a blustery day she had 33 stableford points to win on the back nine from Heather Patterson (Edenmore Golf Club) with Rockmount Golf Club member Andrea Patterson back in third place with 31 points.

In the men's section Lurgan Golf Club member Tom Hogan (9), with 38 points, had two points to spare over 9handicap Kilrea Golf Club member Davy Bamford with Donal Mullan (Moyola Park Golf Club) on 35 points.

In the Leinster final, Stackstown members emerged winners in both sections. In the men's section Michael Walsh (10) with 39 points had a point to spare over Glencullen Golf Club's Ger Baker (15) and Brendan McCarthy (10) from Corrstown Golf Club back on 36 points. In the ladies section Anna Deignan (19) with 38 points had a point win over Mullingar member Siobhan O'Donnell-Murphy (16) with Wicklow Golf Club member Mairead Dowling (11) back in third place on 35 points.

The four winners now join Ted Murphy (Oughterard Golf Club), Marcella Fallon (Loughrea Golf Club), Martin Garvey (Ceann Sibeal Golf Club) and Fiona Corbett (Limerick County Golf Club) at the All Ireland final to be held over 72 holes (Pinta, Villamoura Old, Morgado and Morgado Alamos) in the Algarve, Portugal (12-19 October). The Hotel Tivoli Almansor in Carvoeiro will host the party in the Algarve.

The event, now in its fourth year, is a singles competition open to all club members affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies Golf Union. AIG Europe is a major sponsor of amateur golf in Ireland sponsoring the Irish Close Amateur Championship and senior Interprovincial. No fee is requested from the participating players as AIG donated 1 from every Golfsure Personal premium during 2007 to the Beaumont Hospital Foundation for the purchase of cancer treatment equipment. The tournament has raised over 350, 000 for the Foundation in the four years of its existence.
