Q: I have an upcoming interview for a senior management position within the Civil Service. I will be participating in a Group Exercise. I'm not really sure what is expected of me. Have you any advice?

A: Group Exercises are increasingly being introduced into Senior Management selection processes. Employers are looking for candidates applying for senior roles to demonstrate competencies such as strategic thinking, leadership, personal effectiveness and communication in 'real life' situations.

These exercises are put together to simulate real life scenarios using fictitious content. Candidates are expected to use only the information provided as the basis of their discussion. This ensures all candidates are starting from an equal position. Remember that you are not directly competing against these people at this stage of the process.

Rather, you should all be working together. Assessors will measure the contribution each individual makes to the group, rather than making comparisons between individuals. It is possible that each member of the group can score strongly in this exercise.

You'll be given individual roles within the group, and a group objective to achieve a group objective. In the absence of a designated chairperson or leader, assessors can see how effectively you relate with your colleagues, negotiate on your brief and achieve the objective.

Sample material may be made available to you in advance. Use this to familiarise yourself with the format of the exercise. By doing this you will have some idea of what to expect on the day.

However the information you receive on the day will likely be more detailed than material provided in advance.
