PRESENTER of Househunters and Afternoon Show property pundit Liz O'Kane and her architect husband Rory O'Reilly have put their Rathmines home up for sale. "It has been our dream to design and build our own sustainable house and it looks like the opportunity is presenting itself, " says O'Kane.
After buying the award-winning mews at No 3 Louis Lane, originally designed by McCullagh Mulvin, the couple, who have two children, adapted it for low-maintenance family living. They installed a new navy kitchen with nougat reconstituted stone worktop and bleached oak wall units in the 55ft-long living area upstairs, where floor-to-ceiling windows have views of the striking southfacing garden.
A 50in plasma television encased in oak panelling, designed by O'Reilly, is given pride of place over the cantilvered solid-fuel fireplace with limestone hearth. "As a family, we've done a huge amount of entertaining around sports events with the television taking centre stage, " says O'Kane.
Downstairs, the entrance hallway, with its eyecatching glass staircase and limestone flooring, was reconfigured and extended. A passageway that previously led to the garden was divided into three separate areas to provide a wet room, utility, multipurpose area (which acts as a self-contained guest bedroom) and study with door to decking.
The main bedroom has access to the bathroom and another double bedroom is currently used by the children, Rossa and Ellie's double sleepspace. Both bathrooms have been completely refurbished.
The free flow of space and ability to see right through to the 45ft x 21ft garden . . . which is filled with mature trees and shrubs and features shots of pink inspired by Luis Barragan, one of Mexico's most influential 20th-century architects . . . adds to the appeal of the 186sq m (2,000sq ft) home.
