Citroen's C-Cactus will turn heads

THIS is the creation that is proof Citroen is the company showing the most French flair these days. The C-Cactus is an eco-friendly car that will turn heads both for its interior as well as the exterior styling and it has technology that will return almost 100mpg.

The power source is a 1.4 litre 70bhp diesel with hybrid know-how. It is capable of running almost silently on battery power and the diesel is helped by a 30bhp electric motor which boosts power for high speeds and overtaking.

The diesel engine emissions are extremely small . . . a mere 78g/km. The C4 sized car can return an incredible 97.4mpg as the engine shuts down in urban traffic as it runs on electric power. This is the first Citroen hybrid to use a 1.4 litre diesel engine. Both the new 1.4 litre and a 1.6 litre diesel electric HDI are expected in model production in the next two years.

The C-Cactus offers interesting ideas on interior specification and layout, many of which are expected to be included in future Citroen family models.

Everything that is not essential to the running of the car or the comfort of passengers has been removed. Windows are fixed with only sliding panels of glass for paying tickets at barriers as an automatic air conditioning system makes it unnecessary for the windows to be opened.

Also body panels have been kept to a minimum with the front bumper running to the tailgate.

There is a glass roof for extra light, and to cut down weight, and a sliding rear seat to accommodate luggage or people.
