ALL eyes at the Curragh this afternoon will be on Aidan O'Brien's French import US Ranger when he makes his debut for the Ballydoyle maestro in the listed Waterford Testimonial Stakes.
Kieren Fallon's mount was a useful performer when trained in France and stepped up on his seventh placing in the English 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket to fill the runner-up spot behind Tariq in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.
US Ranger can be expected to improve from the switch to O'Brien's yard and it will be a major surprise if he fails to come out on top.
English trainer Dandy Nicholls made four entries for the race but relies on just one in Strike Up The Band who commands obvious respect and ranks as one of the dangers, along with Benwilt Breeze who finished second for trainer Ger Lyons in last Saturday's Ayr Gold Cup.
US Ranger's stable-companion Lizard Island will be fancied to give trainer Aidan O'Brien his 10th success in the Group 2 Juddmonte Beresford Stakes at the expense of the David Myerscough-trained Bruges.
The latter, who was recently purchased by Hamdan Al Maktoum, confirmed the promise of his debut win when following up in the Golden Fleece Stakes at Leopardstown in July and has obviously recovered from the slight setback that has kept him off the track since then.
Dermot Weld is represented by Carribean Sunset in the Group 3 CL Weld Park Stakes, a race run in memory of his late father Charlie that he will obviously be keen to win. Longing To Dance, from the David Wachman stable, is another one to consider on the strength of her second placing in the Flame Of Tara Stakes, but slight preference is for the Mark Johnston-trained Lady Jane Digby, one of two Englishtrained runners in the race.
Pistol Flash, winner of a one mile six furlong flat race confined to amateur riders at Listowel two weeks ago, goes in search of further success on the level in the Joe Malone Lifetime Achievement Handicap. She holds more appeal than the hat-trick-seeking Taralaya or Azalea.
Racing also takes place today at Clonmel where Cool Running gets the vote to score for trainer Christy Roche and jockey Tony McCoy in the ISF EBF Captain Christy Novice Chase.
The selection has won four of his last five outings and was a creditable third at Galway on his penultimate start. He should be suited by the return to a longer trip.
Cool Running's owner JP McManus is also expected to collect courtesy of the Joe Crowley-trained Good Harvest in the Laganore Maiden Hurdle.
Sian Thomas, from the inform David Marnane stable, should be good enough to score under David Casey in the John Costigan Memorial Novice Hurdle.
