ACES COME IN SPADES OVER IN NEW JERSEY
A report from America of two players in the same group recording back-toback aces at the same hole got us thinking about an extremely rare feat for which you'll get odds of 17 million to one according to Golf Digest.
Seconds after Thomas Brady had his hole-in-one at the 179-yard seventh hole at Forsgate Country Club in New Jersey last week, Dennis Gerhart stepped up and followed him in. "It's just unbelievable, " said the club's director of golf, Jim Woods.
"I've never heard of that happening anywhere in the world."
While there's uncertainty over how many times it has happened across the globe, we know for sure that it happened on 19 August 1988 at Woodbrook near Bray in county Wicklow where the late Peter Donnelly and Esmonde Reynolds had back-to-back holes-in-one.
Playing the short 17th, Donnelly was first to make his ace when his eight iron flew all the way into the hole. "Top that, " Donnelly said, whereupon an unfazed Reynolds managed to hole out with a nine iron.
SINGH NO LONGER SINGING SO LOUDLY
It seems reasonable to expect that Vijay Singh will be keeping his thoughts to himself ahead of his Presidents Cup singles later today. Two years ago, as Singh prepared to take on Fred Couples, he was reported to have said that the USA should have a buggy waiting around the 12th where he expected the match to finish. As it happened, word of the Fijian's put-down got out and seemed to inspire the Americans as Couples defeated Singh by one hole.
DALY DOESN'T SEEM TO LIKE PLAYING DAILY
There were more than a few raised eyebrows recently when John Daly announced on TV that his current travails were mostly due to the fact he hadn't been able to play in enough tournaments this season.
He's dependent on sponsors' invitations and exemptions yet some sponsors might be losing patience because of the 11 tournaments to which he was invited, he withdrew three times and missed the cut in four.
