C of I backs ban on gay bishops



THE Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh, Reverend Alan Harper, has backed a statement by the Episcopal Bishops Conference in New Orleans that the church should not allow "noncelibate gays and lesbians" to become bishops. In a statement issued yesterday, Harper also supported the decision of the conference "not to authorise public rites for the blessing of same-sex unions until a broader consensus emerges in the communion or until general convention takes further action."
