AROUND 300 people protested on O'Connell Street in Dublin yesterday to show solidarity with the people of Burma. The protest was organised by Burma Action Ireland to support the Burmese people and pressure the military there to cease violence.
Organiser Mary Montaut said the extent of the violence committed against Burmese civilians was not being reported in the media. The Burmese government claims just 10 people have died as a result of the violence but international groups estimate hundreds have been killed.
Similar protests took place worldwide yesterday. Protestors also signed a petition at Dublin's Spire calling on Chinese president Hu Jintao to force Burma to engage in a process of valid national reconciliation.
