For Cod and Ulster serving the Best burgers in Belfast
Isabel Hayes

IT'S NOW possible to eat Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams. In burger form, that is.

An award-winning new chip shop in east Belfast, cannily named 'For Cod and Ulster', has embraced the spirit of peace in the North with a range of culinary delights named after Ulster's most controversial figures.

For just 16.90, you can purchase the King Billy Family Feast. If you're a fan of onions, the Ian Paisley burger will do it for you, with bacon, cheese, salad and an onion ring. Unsurprisingly, however, it is the George Best monster burger (bird on top, beef down below) that has the punters coming back for more.

"I came up with the idea about three years ago when I was in Spain and I saw a chip shop called 'The Codfather', " said proprietor David Kerr. "I immediately thought of 'For Cod and Ulster' and thought I should do something about it."

So he undertook courses in business and cooking and last April opened the doors of For Cod and Ulster, a brightlypainted chip shop in the spirit of the northern murals. The chipper has been so successful that tour buses now take it in on their tours of the North, with word of the venture spreading as far as Australia.

"Our aim is to set up a whole chain and have one in every town in the North, " said Kerr. "We're already updating our website to sell t-shirts, mugs, rocks and sunglasses. We have the history of Northern Ireland written up all over the walls and people say it's more like coming to a museum than a chip shop."

That doesn't stop the orders coming in, though. "The George Best burger is the most popular because we have a challenge written up saying: 'Are you man enough to eat this?'" said Kerr. "So all the lads coming in after a few pints have to try it out."

Last week, For Cod and Ulster came second in the BT Top 50 Business Awards and Kerr plans to set up a franchise in the south. "I think a 'For Cod and Ireland' could work very well, " he said. "It's great to be able to do something like this up here now. It's all very tongue-in-cheek and there hasn't been any trouble. I just can't wait to get one open on the Falls Road."
