Paddy Power tries and fails

 


BOOKMAKER Paddy Power left the International Rugby Board thoroughly unamused last week by its latest attempt to get one past the anti-marketing police at the Rugby World Cup. First the IRB refused to refer to Tonga player Epeli Taoine by his new name, Paddy Power. Then when the entire Tonga team had their hair dyed green in protest, rugby authorities threatened to fine the Tonga side at least as much as they had received from the bookmakers. Players were forced to dye their hair back to its original colour.

Paddy Power, the bookmakers' eponymous head of marketing, said the IRB's action had backfired.

"Tonga has become everyone's second favourite team, " he said. In protest, he said, they were handing out 2,000 bright green Afro wigs before Friday's Tonga versus England match. RD
