LAST week's BT Digital Music Awards in London had everything you could ever want in an awards ceremony. Crazy pop stars slapping each other on the backs, almost none of the winners showing up, dodgy acceptance speeches, an entire table of former Big Brother contestants, two of whom are about to release a cover version of 'Barbie Girl' (answers on a postcard, please), and a paparrazi scrum outside when said BB stars attempt to go and get the bus home.
If you tuned into Channel 4 on Friday night you may have seen Alex Zane and Sara Cox delivering the wry and witty preambles that marked the awards where swoons of mock surprise marked the announcement of 'best music store'.
No, it wasn't Napster. Yes, it was iTunes.
A curious name from the past arrived in the shape of Tomas Dolby. Remember him? Dolby, as his name suggests, is one of the forefathers of synthpop and was recognised for his 'outstanding contribution to digital music'. Hell, he even turned up to accept the award.
Another was David Gilmour, who was nominated in two categories and took the gong for one . . . the catch-all 'best music blog' (davidgilmour. musicblog. co. uk). The Pink Floyd legend in one go putting to bed the notion that blogging is for young folk . . . and that the Floyd appeal only to the aged.
