A year in the marriage of Andrea Roche and PJ Mansfield

MODEL and former Miss Ireland, Andrea Roche, broke thousands of hearts last year when she tied the knot with her long-standing fiance, PJ Mansfield. But despite her regular appearances on the pages of the celebrity magazines over the years, her wedding was no famefuelled extravaganza, no celebration of tastelessness and paparazzi-themed tack.

Rather, it was an understated affair in a quiet village in west Dublin, where any 'celebrities' were friends, and where most of the glamour was provided by the bride and groom themselves.

The ceremony took place in the 19th century church in Saggart Village, where 300 guests saw Andrea arrive in her father-in-law's silver Rolls Royce, wearing a spectacular Monique L'Hullier ivory-coloured wedding gown (which she helped to design herself, having been familiar with the New Yorkbased designer's creations).

"It was always going to be Saggart, " says Andrea. "It is where I live with PJ, and it is the church where he was christened and confirmed.

Of course, it would have been nice if there had been a suitable church in Clonmel, where I come from, but a lot of my friends are in Dublin, and the church is close to PJ's family home."

The reception took place in a marquee on the grounds of Palmerstown House, which is a recent addition to the Mansfield family's impressive property portfolio. Guests were entertained by a Paris-based 12-piece ensemble called 'Dove', whose white-clad performers included four singers. They were also treated to operatic performances, which Andrea describes as one of the highlights of the whole day.

"The wedding planner, Tara Fay, helped me to organise the day, " she says.

"I think if you are having a hotel wedding, you don't really need a wedding planner, but because we were having it in a marquee, it was definitely better to have one. Tara is the best in the business."

Having the best planner at your disposal will certainly help to calm nerves regarding the event itself. So, with everything in place, what does Andrea remember most about her wedding day?

"I was really nervous beforehand, " she admits.

"But I was amazed at how quickly the morning flew by.

I was about 50 minutes late for the ceremony, because the make-up and hair took such a long time."

The church ceremony was chosen for its simplicity, which allowed the day to progress nicely . . . until about 6.00 am, in fact, before the hardiest guests decided to call it a night. Andrea and PJ, however, had sensibly decided to retire at about two o'clock, in anticipation of the next day's barbecue, before embarking on a relaxing Italian honeymoon.

Now, of course, the happy couple are more than a year into marital bliss . . . although, according to Andrea, not much has changed since August 4, 2006.

"We had lived together for about two years before we were married, so there is not a lot that is different for us, " she explains. "But the year has absolutely flown by, and at the moment it is just a question of everybody annoying me, asking me when I am going to have a baby (which I have no plans to do for a couple of years).

But it's enjoyable being married, and more of my friends are now engaged . . . so I can give them advice about what to expect, and maybe save them a few thousand on a wedding planner!"
