If every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right As regular readers of this column will know, if they can still afford to buy a Sunday newspaper, sport is a funny old game. And occasionally extremely unfunny. So often, trends and statistics, instead of providing the solid ground of reasoned analysis, give us only quicksand and some weights for our boots.
Sport has a way of inverting logic, making the best laid plans and assured musings seem ridiculous, and occasionally costly, in hindsight. So, How's the Form, whose heart (and wallet) has been gripped by the cruel cold hand of the sporting gods on too many occasions, has decided to introduce a new feature.
As well as maintaining a running total on how our recommendations go, we'll also keep track on what we thought would not happen. At the end of each week's selections, there will be the 'opposite' bet, the bet that goes against the reason and statistical analysis outlined in the previous few words, the bet that doesn't make sense to us, the bet that would go up to a gorgeous woman in a restaurant and tell her that he had no job and lived with his parents. This bet will be called the Costanza.
May the best man win.
SOUTH AFRICA (-9) TO BEAT ARGENTINA IN RWC SEMI-FINAL 5 PTS AT 10-11 Odds quoted are from Paddy Power It's been a wild ride for the Pumas, but we all know what happens to surprise packages in World Cup semi-"nals. South Africa have never lost to Argentina, and will be con"dent of maintaining that run. As stated last week, Argentina might just have been "attering to deceive thus far. France were truly awful, Ireland were stretching the limits of euphemism with their 'blip', and Scotland are Scotland. South Africa are the biggest, most physical team Argentina have yet faced. If they get an early lead tonight, they could win well, especially with Bryan Habana and JP Pietersen snif"ng around for mistakes by an occasionally unorthodox back line. Fiji did rattle South Africa, but they tightened up and closed the deal. Argentina must be drained by their efforts, and it's time for lack of depth to count against them. South Africa to win by 10 or more.
