KILTERNAN ON THE MOVE ONCE AGAIN
Kilternan Golf Club has moved home once more. It has left Powerscourt, with the arrival of the new hotel there, and taken up residence at the South County Golf Club. The new arrangements came into effect last weekend with the Kilternan and South County players sharing the weekend timesheets, even mingling together on one line of the sheet, but playing their own distinct competitions.
The two clubs are encouraging members to mingle and both will commence 12-hole competitions in November to help as many players as possible to get meaningful golf within the reduced daylight time.
NARIN & PORTNOO GET TREBLE CELEBRATION
It was treble celebration time at Narin & Portnoo last weekend as they officially opened their newlook links, saw a new course record set and then cheered home their team to a first victory in the County under-16 Cup.
The links has been stretched from a par-69 to a par-73 in a design by Eddie Connaughton. It features two new holes out on new land which facilitated a reduction of the number of parthree holes. The club thus steps into the proud Donegal ring of great golf links which includes Donegal, Rosapenna, Portsalon and Ballyliffin.
In the final medal on Sunday Donal Boyle, a one-handicapper, set a course record with a 75 which included seven birdies.
Ballybofey provided the opposition in the under-16 final but could do little against a barrage of Narin genius. The winning team consisted of Andrew McGovern, Finnian O'Doherty, Brendan Quinn, John Moore, Patrick Roarty and Martin Byrne
RYAN MOVES ON AFTER LONG SERVICE
Damian Ryan, for many years the golf spokesman for Failte Ireland, has left the organisation and is planning to spend the next few months relaxing before revealing any future career moves. He will be greatly missed by the many people and organisations he worked with.
LOONEYS TUNE UP AT KILRUSH
The Looneys are playing the tune at Kilrush right now as brothers Paschal and Gabriel have reached the final of the Club Championship. Meanwhile the Kilrush team, sans a Looney, won the recent Quadrangular Match against Kilkee, Lahinch and Spanish Point. The members of the winning team were Joe Kelly and Denis Hassett . . . who registered 41 points apiece . . . TJ Lyons and Bernard O'Sullivan who had 40 each and PW Glynn with 39 points.
STACK PREVENTS PERFECT DAY FOR WALSH
There was plenty of excitement at Dungarvan when David Walsh scored his first ever hole-in-one at the 13th and seemed to have scooped the pool in the "twos" event only to have Eoin Stack come along and make another ace at the same hole in the very next group.
The club's Golfer of the Year event went right to the wire, just like the Order of Merit chase on the European Tour, with Maurice Conway scoring a great 69 to nip home ahead of Pat Breen.
LEINSTER COUNCIL SEEKING NOMINATIONS
There are four vacancies available on the Leinster Council of the Golfing Union of Ireland and nominations are being sought by 24 October.
It is to be hoped that there will be sufficient nominations as there was no taker last year for the position vacated by John Ferriter as he moved into the honorary treasurer's position.
A second vacancy has occurred with the retirement of Bill Slattery of Royal Dublin and the other two vacancies arise from the decision to create two extra spots for provincial nominees.
KERLEY JR TURNS ON STYLE AT NUREMORE
Life is so uncompllicated when one is young. Ask Damien Kerley Jr who is finding golf exceedingly easy at Nuremore where he breezed around in one over par gross to amass a basket of 47 points in last week's hamper. He won by three from the hapless duo of Greg McAuliffe and former Monaghan football star Tommy McEntee.
Young Kerley started the season playing off 14 handicap and won the hamper playing off 10.
