Horetown House restored

HORETOWN HOUSE, a 17th-century listed building in county Wexford which includes the Cellar restaurant, has undergone extensive refurbishment.

Owners Tom and Bernadette White have spent two years renovating the historic period residence which was built during the Cromwellian era and which was once owned by a member of the Bewley family.

Ten individually-furnished bedrooms in the Grade A listed property have been painstakingly restored to their original splendour. Luxurious silk curtains adorn the windows, 17th-century French beds have been installed and the antique furniture is newly upholstered to complement the carefully selected colour scheme. All the rooms have historically significant names.

The Lady Fitzgerald Suite is named after a previous owner of the property. And Rebecca's Room is named after the eldest daughter of William Goff for whom the house was originally built in 1692.

Downstairs the Major Lakin Room is a stunning period dining room complete with Tara Crystal chandelier and an original brass fireplace. Below stairs, the wine cellar has been tastefully converted into the Cellar Restaurant complete with original stone walls and flagstone floors.

Horetown House which is situated on several acres of parkland outside the quiet village of Foulksmills was once owned by Elizabeth Wilson, granddaughter of Mary Bewley, heiress to the famous coffee house. In 1920 a Major Anthony Lakin and his wife Lady Kathleen Fitzgerald set up home there. Then, in 1961, the property was purchased from the Lakin Estate by the Young family who converted it into a guest house.

Tom White's sister Kate, who is primarily responsible for the restoration work, says she was at first reluctant to undertake the project. "But the house is so stunning and unique I really felt it couldn't be trusted to anyone else. It has been a huge labour of love making the correct renovations and sourcing the appropriate fixtures and fittings in character with the house.

However we are all immensely proud of our achievement and we feel we have made a significant contribution to the preservation of an important heritage site in Ireland."
