Country living close to the city
Valerie Shanley

Spring Hill House is an impressive country home within easy access of the city.

This Georgian residence, dating back to the 1820s, is as attractive as its name, with bright accommodation defined by generous rooms with high ceilings and dual-aspect windows . . . and surrounded by acres of grounds with a courtyard and sunken patio next to the house itself.

Within all of the elegant living space is the opportunity to get down to some serious homework . . . the large study area is bright and inviting with an airy, mezzanine design. Spring Hill sits on the site of an even earlier residence dating from 1760, and has undergone a sympathetic restoration programme.

Typical of grand country houses of the Georgian era, the entrance hall is impressive with the central staircase flanked either side by two formal reception rooms, each with marble fireplaces.

Both rooms are welcoming and bright and the drawing room has dual aspect sash windows.

By contrast, the large kitchen/breakfast room is a wholly modern, family space with boldly painted deep red walls, granite-topped pristine white units anchored by a functional central island, and smart black and white floor tiles. Adjacent is a wellfitted utility with door to the rear courtyard.

There are are four bedrooms upstairs, with the large master room en suite. Echoes of the original layout of these rooms remain in the second bathroom which is accessed dually off the landing and from the designated guest bedroom.

For commuters, the M1 motorway is closeby, while Balbriggan is well-serviced by a regular commuter line rail service. Also within easy reach are Dublin airport and the Pavilions shopping centre in Swords.
