Opera Fantasies for Violin Naxos (66m 15s) Livia Sohn/ Benjamin Loeb . .THE operatic fantasy, as propelled to popularity by Paganini, is a great favourite among violin soloists, mostly because of its requisite virtuosity. Hubay's Carmen fantasy and Raff's Lohengrin introduce this compilation . . . standard stuff, but the listener is treated to some more unusual and worthy arrangements of Stravinsky's Mavra and Golijov's Ainadamar.
Choices such as this might entice the curious violinist to this recording, but for the less invested listener, this becomes tiresome quite quickly, not least because Sohn's approach to phrasing and colouring is largely mundane.
