Historian Diarmaid Ferriter is quite the busy man, what with having two girls under four and enjoying a pint down in Uncle Tom's in Dundrum (see page 5), but he's still managed the time to examine Eamon de Valera's legacy and important contribution to Ireland's political and social fabric is his new book, Judging Dev (out this week and accompanied by a radio series). Was Dev the scheming, wily and uncompromising politician as he's popularly portrayed or is this caricature? With previously unpublished key letters, documents and photographs, the book is a fascinating exploration of one of the most important players in modern Irish history.
