ROUND-UP

Probe into UCD tendering process AN internal investigation has been ordered into the tendering process for consultancy contracts at UCD. Spending on consultants hit 4.4m in 2006, a fourfold increase since 2003, with several contracts awarded outside normal tendering rules, the Sunday Tribune reported last weekend. A UCD spokesperson said the university's procurement office brought the matter to the attention of UCD president Hugh Brady last May. The issue has also been referred to the state's financial watchdog by a senior UCD lecturer.

Loyalist politician detained over teen's murder

FORMER Assembly member and leading PUP member Billy Hutchinson was among those detained yesterday over the murder of Belfast schoolboy Thomas Devlin (15) two years ago. PUP leader Dawn Purvis said:

"It is my understanding he has not been arrested in relation to the killing of Thomas Devlin but that he has been arrested in respect of things he has been saying recently."

Hutchinson is a community worker in the Mount Vernon area of Belfast where police believe the schoolboy's killer lives.

Tabloids just as vital to democracy

IRELAND'S new press ombudsman John Horgan yesterday warned against regarding the word "tabloid" as a synonym for biased, unprofessional or unethical journalism.

Referring to judge Paul Carney's recent controversial speech at UCC, Horgan said: "Good tabloid journalism is as vital to the health of our democratic system as good broadsheet journalism."

He was addressing the NUJ biennial conference in Tullamore, Co Offaly.

New paper for Dun Laoghaire The capital's newest newspaper hit the streets last week, concentrating on local news for the greater Dun Laoghaire area. The Dun Laoghaire Express plans to focus on informing the community and giving a voice to the people living there, said.

editor Chris Macey.
