IT now looks certain that the decision to remove Steve Staunton from the post of Ireland manager will be taken at an emergency FAI Board of Management meeting on Tuesday. The majority of the 10-man board, including chief executive John Delaney, have decided privately that Staunton's reign should end in the wake of the team's disappointing 1-1 draw against Cyprus in Croke Park last Wednesday and all that remains is to carry out the procedure officially. It is believed that the manager will be offered somewhere in the region of 500,000 as compensation for the two years left on his contract.
Reports late last week that the meeting would take place this afternoon are wide of the mark and instead the likelihood is that Tuesday will be the day. "Most of the board members have day jobs and it is matter of them synchronising their diaries in order for them to attend, " said an FAI spokesman yesterday.
