Self-taught Limerick artist Fergal McCarthy believes Dublin doesn't have the same relationship with the Liffey in the same way Paris, Bangkok or Stockholm have with their principle rivers. He did a solo swim of the river earlier this year and the event was captured via video and photos and form the basis of his exhibition called, simply enough, The Liffey Swim, which can be seen at Castletown House, Co. Kildare until 30 November. McCarthy says when he did his swim, passers-by were bemused by the apparent madness of one person swimming down a polluted stretch of water by himself but he hopes this act and this exhibition will get people thinking about more ways in which we can use and appreciate the river.
