CAVAN senior footballer Rory Gallagher was one of two GAA stars arrested by gardai hours after the Dublin county final last Bank Holiday Monday.
Gallagher was detained by gardai on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, while his St Brigid's team-mate Kevin Bonner was arrested for allegedly possessing cocaine.
The two men were in St Brigid's GAA club in Castleknock for a function following the team's defeat to St Vincent's in the county final.
Uniformed gardai on a routine patrol observed two individuals acting suspiciously in a Northern-registered jeep at around 2.30am Tuesday morning in the car park of the club.
They went to investigate and allegedly saw Bonner with a quantity of cocaine on his lap, and he was immediately arrested.
The jeep belonged to Gallagher (28) and he was sitting in the driver's seat. He was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in control of a vehicle.
The men were taken to Blanchardstown garda station where they were released without charge. Gallagher was later charged and will appear in Dublin District Court later this month. A file on Bonner is to be sent to the DPP.
The Sunday Tribune can reveal that Bonner was arrested in July and charged after he was allegedly found drunk and lying on the road in Blanchardstown. He was charged under Section 4 of the Public Order Act for being intoxicated in a public place and under Section 59 of the Road Traffic Act for being intoxicated and a danger to traffic.
