i've always been 'a suit'. I've
always been involved in the
business side of marketing and advertising. When we started the agency, one of the biggest
overheads we had was paying photographers to do images. I thought, 'We can't afford that' and that we'd save a huge amount of money if I just got my technical ability up a bit. So I started doing it and became a bit more
adventurous and ambitious. I found that it gave me a bit more credibility with the creative
people in the agency.
i think my wife would say I probably never unwind, never ever. I don't know what it is but it must be the way I'm programmed. Even in the evening I'm researching, I'm doing things about other things. I probably unwind as much as it's ever possible for me to unwind with my children.
water is a commonality of everything that I do. My company is called Ocean. I grew up by the sea and I surf.
if you're doing landscape photography, you tend to be getting up at four in the morning – I prefer dawn – and as the light rises you're looking to capture a very magical light.
i've got two daughters and I'm soon to have a third. They couldn't be more different. The first daughter lives totally in her imagination and makes up
stories. My second daughter is
totally focussed and perpetually in motion and very physical and probably more inclined towards the sports gene that's in both sides of our family. I'd hate to push any kid either way but I hope they have inherited some artistic gene because there's a huge amount of satisfaction to be gleaned from being involved in something creative.
i plan a lot now. It used to be on a whim and I would walk about and do them
but I found that I would achieve very little by just going out with a camera. Henri Cartier-Bresson was all about the magic of the moment and he'd walk the streets of Paris until he'd discover this
fabulous moment. But it's not really like that with me at all.
