Lee Byrne 4 - Mostly anonymous. Did manage one foray into the line but the referee called a penalty for crossing . Came off with a heel injury before half-time.
Tommy Bowe 5 - Tried to turn and skin Bryan Habana at one point which at least would have been a yarn for the grandkids. Sadly, it didn't work out and he gave away another soul-sucking penalty. Came into it as the game wore on
Brian O'DRiscoll 8 - The big thing the Lions took away from the game was the centre partnership. O'Driscoll was dangerous throughout, fast and low-running as usual. Final pass for both tries.
Jamie Roberts 8 - Linked brilliantly with O'Driscoll all game, especially as the Lions came chasing in the final 20. Not shy in the tackle either. The Lions will need to send just about everything through him next week as he alone looked able to match the Boks' strength.
Ugo Monye 4 - Probably should have made a better fist of the finish in the first half and definitely should have done so with nine minutes to go. In a game where the Boks were so dominant, every chance had to be taken. Monye could lose his now.
Stephen Jones 4 - Nightmare of an afternoon. Missed the early kicks at goal that would have kept the Lions with an oxygen supply and couldn't relieve the pressure out of hand either. The game was lost by the time he and Roberts started linking well
Mike Phillips 6 - Took his try well late on, throwing a dummy the whole South Africa defence bought close to the line. But there were still times when he delayed his pass too long. Against someone of the calibre of Fourie Du Preez, he didn't do too bad.
Gethin Jenkins 4 - Although not quite as obviously humiliated as Vickery, he was still part of a front row that got its clock cleaned over the course of the opening hour. Did put in a few tackles and was game around the park. But got minced in the scrum. Big week on the machines coming up.
Lee Mears 3 - Bad enough that one setpiece was getting annihilated without the second one going west as well. But Mears's throws into the line-out were just too inconsistent to give the likes of Matfield and Botha anything but easy pickings.
Phil Vickery 3 - Possibly made to look more hapless than he deserved to but there's no way of sugar-coating it – he was vapourised in the scrum by Mtawarira. Looked bewildered at what was happening to him. Hard to see him starting next week.
Alun Wyn Jones 5 - Showed well enough from time to time but for most part got munched just like the rest of the Lions forwards. Not imposing enough, however, and it mightn't be a great surprise if he's eased aside for the more menacing Simon Shaw .
Paul O'Connell 5 - Spent most of the first hour asking the referee what his decisions were for and spent probably a little too long afterwards complaining about them. Needs a huge game next Saturday if his Lions career isn't to proceed into one long string of disappointments.
Tom Croft 6 - Seems odd to say it but apart from his two tries, he didn't set the pulses racing. Ran a fine line to appear on O'Driscoll's shoulder at just the right time for the first one. A tough day out.
David Wallace 4 - South Africa bossed the breakdown and Wallace never managed to get motoring. Got isolated a couple of times and got pinged as a result. Will possibly keep his place because of his bulk and strength but needs a big improvement.
Jamie Heaslip 4 - Like Wallace, got passed by in a game that was owned by the opposition pack. Never figured, a real disappointment in his Lions debut.
Subs
Adam Jones Scrum settled down significantly upon his arrival, although whether this was due to Vickery's departure or those of both South African prop will be for McGeechan to decide. Stopped the bleeding at least. 6
Rob Kearney Replaced the injured Byrne and took his chance well. Certain as ever under the high ball and used his boot well. Good chance of a start next week. 7
Matthew Rees Took over from Mears but as with Jones, it's not certain things wouldn't have improved anyway as the Boks cleared the bench. 5
