The Government's Chief Veterinary Officer is expected to press home the point that Irish beef remains 100% safe to eat at an EU meeting later today. Paddy Rogan is in Brussels to attend a meeting of chief vets from the EU member states. The contamination scare that has seen Irish pork and bacon products removed from shops across the world will be top of the agenda. Yesterday, the Government confirmed that elevated dioxin levels had also been found in three cattle herds that consumed the contaminated feed at the centre of the crisis. However, experts say the positive tests in the beef herds are not as serious as the those in the pig sector as cattle farmers rely much less on purchased feed than pig farmers. Ireland also has a much better traceability system for cattle than for pigs due to the BSE scare in the 1980s and 1990s.
