A Romanian man has appeared in court in Dublin charged with attempting to smuggle cigarettes into Ireland from the Ukraine. The 28-year-old was arrested at Dublin Airport after customs officers found 20,000 L&M; brand cigarettes in the man's baggage. He had arrived on a flight from the Ukraine via Frankfurt. He later appeared before Dublin District Court where he was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court on Friday. In another operation customs officers seized 85,000 Benson & Hedges cigarettes from two men who arrived on a flight from Karachi via Istanbul in Turkey. The men were questioned by Gardai before being released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
