The Teacher's Union of Ireland says it expects more than 3,500 second-level teachers to lose their jobs following new figures released by the Department of Education. The figures show that, while enrolments at second-level will increase by around 3,000 this year, teacher numbers will fall by around 14%. The department says around 240 jobs will be lost, but the TUI has rejected this figure and says there will be 3,500 fewer teachers in the system. It says the cutbacks being imposed by the Government are a vicious attack on the Irish education system.
