A former solider who bit the ear of a Garda who was trying to break up a fight in Dublin last year has been sentenced to three years in prison. 23-year-old Darren Joyce from St Ronan's Drive, Clondalkin in Dublin bit Garda Hugh Carroll on March 18th outside a pub on Neilstown Road in Clondalkin. The court heard that Garda Carroll was called to the scene when a massive brawl broke out after a woman was hit with a glass. Garda Carroll was taken to the plastic surgery unit in Beaumont Hospital where he received eight stitches. He was also tested for HIV and Hepatitis, and had to wait six months for the all-clear.
