Controversial pipe-laying work is due to begin in Broadhaven Bay in Co Mayo today as part of the Corrib gas project. The world's largest pipe-laying ship, the Solitaire, is in the area to lay a pipeline between Glengad and the Corrib gas field 80km out to sea. A massive security operation is being put in place, with the Naval Service drafted in to help Gardai protect the ship from anti-Shell protestors. All approaches to Glengad beach are believed to have been sealed off, while around 40 Gardai have been stationed near the Rossport Solidarity Camp to prevent protestors from disrupting the work.
